Freeman Farm at Old Sturbridge Village
Scarecrow Stroll
This October, the fields at the Freeman Farm will come alive with 24 unique scarecrows, including 6 historical characters inspired by the stories Old Sturbridge Village tells every day! These scarecrows will bring personality, creativity, and a touch of autumn whimsy to the landscape. Set along the path across from the Freeman Farmhouse, Scarecrow Stroll offers visitors a fun and memorable way to enjoy the fall atmosphere and capture the perfect autumn photo together. Be sure to grab a Scarecrow Stroll activity sheet in the Country Bank Visitor Center!
Scarecrow Stroll is included with general daytime admission or membership.
Did you know?
- Scarecrows have taken many forms throughout history, from ancient Egypt to today.
- While many people today associate scarecrows with fall and Halloween decorations, early 19th-century New Englanders typically deployed them in the spring and early summer to protect young plants (especially corn!) and early fruits from birds.
- Scarecrows have not always resembled the form of people! Cottage Gardener and Country Gentleman's Companion (1849) gave various suggestions for such devices, such as dangling two pieces of glass from a string or suspending a potato with a feature stuck in it to make a "hobgoblin" bird.
