In 2018, Old Sturbridge Village will partner with seven other Massachusetts-based cultural institutions to celebrate the varied and surprising role of fashion in the Commonwealth. Building on the highly successful collaboration that produced Four Centuries of Massachusetts Furniture, we will leverage our rich and varied collections, programming expertise, and intellectual capital to create a year-long Mass Fashion celebration in 2018 that features exhibitions, a public conference, special events, and other resources to reach audiences in Massachusetts and beyond.
As part of the Mass Fashion collaborative, Old Sturbridge Village will host ReFashioning History: Contemporary Designs Inspired by the Old Sturbridge Village Collection from June 1 to December 30, 2018. The exhibition will invite emerging designers and students to be inspired by the styles, craftsmanship and patterns of the past – whether it’s a delicate lace-trimmed bonnet, the colorful glaze on a redware jug, a shimmering silk gown, or the speckled surface of a painted chest. Using objects from the Museum Collection of more than 50,000 historic artifacts, participants will be asked to design and construct a contemporary piece of fashion to be displayed in the museum's exhibit galleries, alongside its historic counterpart.
Old Sturbridge Village is currently looking for designers with connections to Massachusetts who are interested in participating in the ReFashioning History exhibition. These designers will be invited to tour the Village with the curatorial staff in fall of 2017 in order to become familiar with the Village and its collections. Those interested in submitting a garment for exhibition will be required to submit preliminary sketches on or before December 31, 2017. The top 25 designs will be chosen by an internal committee; the creators of the selected designs will each receive a stipend to aid in the creation of their garment. Final garments must be delivered to Old Sturbridge Village no later than April 15, 2018.
