Adults 55+ get half price admission and extra discounts in September

(STURBRIDGE, MA) -  September 6, 2013:  Old Sturbridge Village celebrates the fall harvest season with an old-fashioned Agricultural Exhibition Sept. 14-15 featuring heirloom vegetables and historical farming techniques. Visitors can take a turn at plowing behind the Village oxen, watch a plowing match and oxen trials, learn to winnow and thresh grain, and shell corn the old-fashioned way. Guests can also meet the Village’s heritage breed farm animals – sheep, pigs, turkeys and a new calf – and see the horse-powered Cider Mill in action. Dairy demonstrations will include cow-milking, butter churning, cheese-making, and ice cream making.

Heirloom vegetables, herbs, and flowers in more than 50 classes will be exhibited and judged in the style of old-fashioned agricultural fairs. Both Village- and visitor-grown entries will be exhibited. Submissions of home-grown vegetables will be on display as part of a Home Gardening Exhibit, and a Farmers Market featuring locally-grown produce will be open at the museum entrance on Sunday, Sept. 15. Details: 800-SEE-1830; www.osv.org.

Historical gardening is an important part of the Old Sturbridge Village mission, and the museum's horticulturists encourage home gardeners to "plant some history" and help save heirloom vegetable and flower varieties from extinction.  According to OSV historians, hundreds of plant varieties have disappeared due to changes in style, taste, and the way farming has changed. Growing heirlooms ensures that the unique genetic properties of these old varieties will survive.

Old Sturbridge Village is one of the country's oldest and largest living history museums, celebrating life in early New England from 1790-1840. The Village offers free parking and is open from 9:30 a.m. - 5:00 p.m. seven days a week. For times and details of all OSV activities visit: www.osv.org or call 1-800-SEE-1830.
