Have you ever wondered what was involved in making and maintaining all the clothing for a family in the 1830s? Join us on August 13th and 14th for our annual Textile Weekend, Clothing a Family, highlighting the frugal and ingenious ways that early 19th-century New Englanders created, cared for, and updated their family’s clothing.
Follow the construction of a dress in a weekend from cutting out to hooking it up for the first time, explore how woolen clothing was re-dyed to give it a fresh new look, discover what kinds of fabrics, trims, and sewing supplies were available in country stores like the Asa Knight store, see a sewing basket being made, learn about the extensive home-based industries that produced shoes and straw hats, and more. Plus, join us for one of the following special programs (subject to change):
- Strawbraiding: A Glimpse into the Collection | 10:00 am & 1:00 pm (Saturday only)
- Textile Exhibit Tour: Needle & Thread | 11:00 am
- Clothing for the Family from the OSV Museum Collection | 1:00 – 3:00 pm
PLUS: Check out our NEW Exhibit, Needle & Thread!
On Saturday, August 13, a new exhibit will be opening in the Dennison Building. Needle & Thread: The Art and Skill of Clothing an Early 19th-Century Family explores all the work that went into outfitting the members of a family, from choosing fabrics and styles, to making, mending, and washing clothes. See gowns, a tail coat, and a sampling of children’s garments from the early 19th century, advice and account books, a c. 1825-1850 washing machine, and more!
It’s Kids Free Summer at the Village! Up to three kids 17 and younger are admitted FREE when accompanied by an adult paying full admission ($28) now through the end of Labor Day (September 5, 2022).
