A Suffield, CT native, Dr. Sylvester Graham was an icon of health, vegetarianism, and temperance during the Village period. He earned his notoriety for a myriad of dietary and cultural beliefs that gave him both great popularity and infamy. In addition to his strict vegetarian diet (which was quite uncommon for the time), he championed the use of pure whole-wheat flour which lead to today’s graham flour and Graham Crackers. Join us to learn a bit more about the life, beliefs, and lasting legacy of this unique figure. If attending the in-person program, please make sure to arrive a few minutes before the program starts in order to check-in at the Visitor Center and walk to the program location.

Garden Thyme programs are held on a select Saturday each month and are FREE for members of Old Sturbridge Village. Led by Village horticultural and agricultural staff, these programs and workshops are held at various sites and deal with a variety of plant-related themes and topics.

Please Note: All visitors and members are currently required to reserve their tickets online to manage capacity in accordance with current Massachusetts guidelines.  Your registration for the in-person Garden Thyme program covers your reservation for that day. Before visiting, please make sure to review our current visiting policies here.
