Sorry, Christmas by Candlelight 2020 is SOLD OUT!

Come experience the history of Christmas traditions at Old Sturbridge Village. Our programs are designed with your safety in mind – featuring a vast array of outdoor festivities. Relish old traditions and create new ones as we highlight homemade Christmas decor. See demonstrations of classic Christmas projects like knitting stockings, wreath making, and making natural ornaments. Watch as we make a traditional Christmas meal, punch tin lanterns, make ice skates or a sled, and other special projects. You’ll enjoy strolling from the Common to the Countryside as you enjoy our festive, outdoor decorations, Christmas Tree Trail, and Christmas Wish Bridge. And Christmas by Candlelight wouldn’t be complete without a horse-drawn carryall ride and warming up by the bonfires. We hope your family will join ours, as we celebrate a very special Christmas.

The program will be pretty much the same on all dates, but we also have a couple of special date-specific things happening:

Frequently Asked Questions

What Happens if it snows?

Old Sturbridge Village rarely closes due to weather but if a snow storm does hit and makes travel hazardous, the Village will close for however long as necessary. Any notice of the museum closing due to weather will be posted on the Old Sturbridge Village Facebook pageTwitter, and the main website (on this page and the homepage). Every attempt will be made to reschedule you for a future date.

Are there discounts for Christmas by Candlelight tickets?

Discounts that apply to standard daytime admission do NOT apply to Christmas by Candlelight. Village members had early access and a discount November 10-16, 2020.

What food options will be available during Christmas by Candlelight?

While we are unable to host sit-down dining experiences as we have in past years due to ongoing COVID-19 restrictions, we will have a variety of concessions available. Check back for more details.

Where do I park?

Free parking is available in the main parking lot at Old Sturbridge Village. If using a GPS to get to the Village, please use the address “29 Stallion Hill Road” in Sturbridge, MA.

Why do I need to wear a mask outside?

We ask that all visitors follow state guidelines and must wear masks when you come into Old Sturbridge Village, per the current MA state order:

“Governor Baker issued an Order effective November 6, 2020 requiring face masks or cloth face coverings in all public places, even where they are able to maintain 6 feet of distance from others.

The revised order still allows for an exception for residents who cannot wear a face-covering due to a medical or disabling condition, but it allows employers to require employees to provide proof of such a condition. It also allows schools to require that students participating in in-person learning provide proof of such a medical or disabling condition.”

From the MA state website here.

Please be responsible and think of the safety of yourselves and others during this time.

Are buildings open?

Due to ongoing restrictions related to COVID-19, buildings will not be open during Christmas by Candlelight 2020. Instead, we’ve moved interpretive programming! At some locations within the Village, visitors will be able to interact with our costumed historians as they demonstrate certain crafts and skills outside. At other locations, guests will be able to see our costumed historians at work inside, through open doors and windows.

What if I or a member of my party becomes ill and cannot visit on the day we intended?

Please stay home if you, or someone in your party, is ill. If you are unable to visit on the day you purchased your ticket for, you may email visitorcenter@osv.org or call 508-347-0213 to reschedule your ticket. Rescheduling is subject to availability. Tickets are nonrefundable.

Who should I contact if someone in my party has special needs or a question?

Contact Old Sturbridge Village’s Visitor Center at 800-733-1830 or visitorcenter@osv.org.

What should I wear?

Please dress appropriately for the weather. Due to COVID-19 restrictions, all Christmas by Candlelight 2020 activities will take place outside. We also suggest wearing comfortable shoes, as there is plenty of walking.

Is Old Sturbridge Village open during the day?

In order to focus on the evening holiday events, Old Sturbridge Village will be closed during the day in December 2020.

Are dogs allowed?

Given MA state guidelines on non-commercial dog walking, Old Sturbridge Village is unable to permit dogs on the property. Service animals are allowed.

What is the Village's policy regarding photography?

Photography in Old Sturbridge Village is permitted for personal use only. By entering the museum, you agree to the use of your image for publicity purposes.

Tripods and selfie-sticks are not permitted.

Is there anything else I should know before visiting for the first time?

Old Sturbridge Village is an outdoor, living history museum and learning resource that invites all visitors to find meaning, pleasure, relevance, and inspiration in the exploration of New England’s past. It is a nonprofit, educational museum that is open year-round. The centerpiece of the museum is a re-created rural New England town of the 1830s set on more than 200 acres of historical landscape, encompassing a Center Village, Mills Area, and Countryside.

When you visit Old Sturbridge Village, you will see costumed historians (sometimes called “interpreters”) throughout the Village, working in trade shops, on the farm, or cooking in front of a fire. Even though they wear clothing like people wore in the 1830s, they are just like you, but they know a lot about New England history. They are not acting as a character or pretending to be a person from the past. They speak in the present tense and can help you compare life in the 1800s to life in the 21st century. Don’t be afraid to ask them lots of questions! They will help to enrich your experience of the past.

During Christmas by Candlelight, our costumed historians do things that are very different from the activities they do throughout the rest of the year – but there are still demonstrations of activities like tin work, hearth cooking, pottery, and more. While early 19th-century New Englanders typically did not celebrate Christmas, our costumed historians know a lot about the evolution of Christmas celebrations in this region.
