Take a journey into the past. Experience first-hand what life was like in 19th-century rural New England’s countryside by spending a night in the Emerson Bixby House, home of a Blacksmith/Farmer and his family. After you are appropriately dressed to toil, your real labor begins. Working alongside costumed historians, your work will include: cooking a 19th-century dinner and breakfast, learning a craft, farm chores, gardening, and hauling wood and water. Meal preparations begin with vegetables to be chopped, bread and pies to be baked and a joint of meat to be roasted. After consuming the fruits of your labor (along with the clean-up) it’s time to sit back to relax by the light of the fireplace and partake in evening amusements. Parlor games and fireside stories make for a delightful night and before you know it, it is time to turn in. Sleep snuggly on feather and straw, held tightly up by ropes. Morning comes early when there are farm chores to do: animals to be feed, cows to be milked, eggs to be collected, and yards to be mucked out. Along with farm chores, breakfast preparations need to be completed before you can enjoy that cup of fresh roasted coffee with your morning repast. All combined, it will be a unique and memorable experience!
As the experience is designed for six participants, please be aware that you may be with other guests. There are three separate rooms each with a bed that sleeps two, separate cots will be available. Children over 10 are welcome to attend.
Included in this experience are costumed historians guiding your activities, 19th-century costumes, two hours learning a craft in an OSV exhibit, preparing an evening supper and morning breakfast, helping with morning farm chores and, of course, the opportunity to sleep in a 19th-century-bed chamber.
Space is limited and pre-registration is required.
