A discussion about race in early New England (meets at the Friends Meetinghouse, Building #6).

11:00 a.m. & 2:30 p.m. A Pickle for the knowing ones: The eccentric life of “Lord” Timothy Dexter of Newburyport (in the Gebhardt Barn, Building #14).

12:00 p.m. & 3:30 p.m. Excerpts From a Letter by 19th Century Activist Sarah Grimke: Her response to a letter about women speaking publicly (in the Friends Meetinghouse, Building #6).

Music Performances
10:00 a.m. Musical Highlights, The Guitar: Watch how a historical guitar is serviced, cleaned, strung, and played! Learn about the guitar in New England, and hear a sample of music performed on a 19th century style guitar (in the Bullard Tavern, Building #3).


3:30 p.m. Musical Highlights, the “Hurdy Gurdy”:

Listen to this strange and unusual instrument at the Bullard Tavern (Building #3).

Gardens

2:00 p.m. A Tour of the Herb Garden: 19th Century Botanical Medicine: Plant-derived medicines played a key role in treating health problems in the 19th century. Tour the Herb Garden to find favorite herbs used by botanical physician Samuel Thomson in the 1800s (at the Herb Garden).

Stagecoach
2:00-4:00 p.m. Ride the Stagecoach|$3.00 per person.
Hundreds of stagecoaches linked most towns in early New England, carrying passengers and mail on set schedules. Today the stagecoach circles our historic common. Purchase a $3.00 token at the Visitor Center or the Miner Grant Store. Picks up outside the Bullard Tavern.
Please note tokens are nonrefundable.
Unused tokens can be redeemed on a future visit.

 

Old Sturbridge Village’s new exhibit, Needle and Thread:
The Art and Skill of Clothing an Early 19th Century Family highlights the responsibilities held by rural New England housewives in constructing new garments, patching, mending, and darning worn items, and repurposing old items into new wardrobes. The exhibit features over a dozen garments and accessories, along with other textile and clothing objects from the Old Sturbridge Village Museum Collections.

The Carryall (weather permitting)
We offer a horse-drawn carryall ride included with the price of admission. From 10:00 a.m.-2:00 p.m. you can board behind the Bullard Tavern (#3) or in front of the Blacksmith Shop (#39) about every 20 minutes for a ride around the Mill Pond. There is no carryall operating outside of these times.

Take home a traditional rural New England treasure or locally made gift. Village-made crafts and kits, home décor, books, and more await! We stay open a bit later than the rest of the Village.

The Environmental Point of View
Woodland Walk (#47) A short hike along Pogus Brook to a wooded viewing platform.

Pasture Walk (#49) Takes you to the top of Powder House Hill, offering views of the pastured landscape.

River Walk (#50) Best views of the Wight Dam and a peaceful setting to enjoy the Quinebaug River.

Learn about the long history of parades in this region, and their many purposes. Visit all three of the exhibitions’ locations in the Visitor Center (#2C), Countryside Gallery (#40), and Armed & Equipped Militia Exhibit (#26).
