Rough, crude cast iron bar or “pig”. Raised cast legend: “SALISBURY 1780”, likely for Salisbury Furnace in Salisbury, CT., which operated from before the Revolution until the 1830s, under several different managements. Iron pigs were cast in blast furnaces in open sand molds and then recast into kettles, machine parts or other usable forms.
