The Herb Garden is a seasonal exhibit with more than 400 varieties of plants commonly cultivated in 19th-century New England household gardens or gathered from fields and woodlands. Herbs were used to flavor and preserve food, heal the sick, dye plants, and repel insects. In the Herb Garden, the herbs are displayed and grouped according to their traditional uses – culinary, medicinal, or household – and labeled with both their scientific and common names.
