Lesson Activities

1. Defining Family
Students brainstorm and discuss the concepts of family and family structure today.

2. Family Roles and Use of Space Today
Investigate and chart the use of space in homes today. (Group 1)

3. Family Functions
Create a collage representing the functions of contemporary families at home and in the community that, in Lesson 6, will be compared to the functions of families living in the early 1800s. (Group 2)

4. Daily Activities
After collecting data, students create a chart showing the proportion of time family members spend in various activities. In Lesson 6, modern use of time will be compared to that of the early 19th century. (Group 3)

5. Traditions
Using a survey, students will gather information about family traditions and stories to compare with families living in early 19th-century New England.

6. Making and Keeping a Journal
Directions for making simple journals for students to record their own thoughts and activities in. Journals can be used as an assessment tool.

7. 19th-Century Journals
Students are introduced to primary source journals and what can be learned from them.
