April School Vacation Adventures

 

A history lesson your kids will never forget...

Discovery CamperA 19th Century Child's Adventure - in-costume experiences where children will take on the role of a real Sturbridge resident in the 1830s.  Children will experience a child's play and work by making toys, assisting with farm and house work and much, much more! Register for two, three or all five days!

Child's Play - Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday (April 15-17)

Imagine!  A lot of work and a little play were common in the early 19th century!  Learn about the ways in which children had fund and celebrated in their daily lives and on special occasions.  Join us for an introduction to store-bought, shop-made and homemade toys, stories and games that entertained children in early New England.  Children will also make their own toy and learn to play "old" games, attend a magic show and celebrate the differences and similarities of long ago to today! This Adventure is packed with fun and is certain to keep the children busy and engaged in the 1830s! Scroll down to learn more and register!


Child's Work!

Child's Work - Thursday and Friday (April 18-19) 

Farm girls and boys were indispensable members of the family work force.  Children began with simple chores like shelling corn, weeding the garden and bringing in firewood.  Eventually, they took on increasingly more difficult tasks and new responsibilities as they grew older and more skilled. In this Adventure, children will be introduced to necessary skills - cooking (19th century style!), preparing a kitchen garden and fields and sewing. Of course, there will be time for play as well and children will end this adventure with a celebratory dance!

 

In addition to the above, Discovery Adventure children will also:
~ dress in 1830s costume ~
~ receive their own mug and tin pail (boys) or basket (girls) ~
~ take on the role of a real Sturbridge resident from the early 1800s ~
~ cook over an open hearth ~ learn a 19th century craft ~
~ tour the Village and interact with costumed historians ~
~ enjoy and afternoon snack which includes a chocolate chip cookie and lemonade ~

Adventure programs are offered during April vacation week (scroll down to register); sessions run from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.
