Trick-or-treating and ‘Trail of Terror’ highlight spooky, safe event
1,000 hand-carved pumpkins on display
STURBRIDGE, Mass. (Oct. 9, 2012): Old Sturbridge Village will host one of the region's largest Halloween events with the return of its annual "Things That Go Bump in the Night" celebration set for 5:00-9:00 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 27. Each year, nearly 4,000 visitors converge on the Village to enjoy "spooky but safe" trick-or-treating from house to house around the Village Common, and the scarier "Trail of Terror" through the OSV countryside for ages 11 and up. The event features the glow of 1,000 hand-carved jack-o-lanterns and nearly 30 Halloween themed "vignettes" including everything from fairy tale characters to witches, wizards, zombies and vampires. For details, call 1-800-SEE-1830 or visit www.osv.org
Advance discount tickets are available through October 21 for $15 per person ($12 for OSV Members), with children 2 and under admitted free. Tickets for the “Trail of Terror” are an additional $8. “Things That Go Bump in the Night” is usually a sell-out, so advance registration is strongly encouraged. If tickets are still available on the day of the event, they will be sold at the door for $17. “Bump in the Night" is sponsored by Country Bank, and will take place rain or shine.
This year, vignettes in the Center Village are based on favorite fairy tale scenes, and children can visit 17 different locations, meeting Snow White, Goldilocks, Little Bo Peep, Red Riding Hood, Cinderella, Pinocchio, Miss Muffet, Mother Goose, and even Glinda the Good Witch. Visitors can enjoy juggling by Lucky Bob the Comedic Juggler and see a shadow puppet show featuring Jack and the Beanstalk stories. There will be some mildly haunted scenes, but with an appropriate "spookiness" level for young children. Food and beverage options will be available throughout the evening, including dinner items like hamburgers, chili, chowder, soup, and sandwiches, as well as snacks like donuts and hot cider.
In contrast to the milder child-friendly activities around the Old Sturbridge Village Common, the “Trail of Terror” will not be for the faint of heart. The route for the guided haunted walk goes out into the Village Countryside and through the covered bridge, and is designed for adults, teens, and “tweens” (ages 11 and up) who are looking for a scarier, more “hair-raising” experience.
Old Sturbridge Village celebrates New England life in the 1830s and is one of the largest living history museums in the country. Beginning Oct. 22, the museum is open Wednesday – Sunday 9:30 a.m. – 5:00 p.m. OSV offers free parking and a free return visit within 10 days. Admission: $24; seniors $22; children 3-17, $8; children 2 and under, free. Woo Card subscribers get $5 off adult daytime admission; college Woo cardholders receive $12 off adult daytime admission. For times and details of all OSV activities visit: www.osv.org or call 1-800-SEE-1830.
