Kids Get Free OSV Admission through Labor Day Sept. 2
(STURBRIDGE, MA) - August 9, 2013: On Friday, August 23, Old Sturbridge Village is offering the last of three "$5 Fridays" and will roll back its admission prices to just $5 for all adult visitors. In addition, the Village is offering free admission for children throughout the month of August. The $5 Friday adult discount is made possible by Southbridge Credit Union.
The museum's free children's admission offer in August extends through Labor Day Sept. 2, 2013. All kids age 17 and younger get free admission to Old Sturbridge Village when accompanied by an adult - an $8 value per child. The special $5 adult price discount on August 23 represents a costs savings of nearly 80% off the regular adult museum admission price of $24. Normal daytime admission for seniors is $22. "We want to make sure that families get the chance for one last 'hurrah' before school starts," said Deb Friedman, Old Sturbridge Village vice president for public program. "With these combined discounts on Aug. 23 a family of four can visit the Village for just $10 – a wonderfully affordable last summer 'staycation.'"
Offering discounts and free admission for children is part of a concerted effort by Old Sturbridge Village to make the Village more accessible to families on a budget, according to Jim Donahue, OSV President and CEO. The tactic is resonating with visitors -- nearly 10,000 people attended the museum's recent Redcoats & Rebels event held Aug. 2-3 setting an all-time attendance record on the 10th anniversary of this event.
Southbridge Credit Union, the sponsor of $5 Friday, is celebrating its 75th anniversary this year. SCU has 13,000 members, 55 employees, and has offices in Sturbridge, Auburn, and Southbridge, Massachusetts, including a student-operated branch at Southbridge High School.
Summer is an especially popular time to visit Old Sturbridge Village because summer activities are in full swing, with daily stagecoach and boat rides, interactive crafts, fishing in the Millpond and traditional games on the Common – old-fashioned "base ball" and tug-of-war, which was called "French and English" in the early 1800s.
In addition, the Village offers all of its signature craft demonstrations, and guests can see the printer, shoemaker, potter, blacksmith and "tinners" at work. OSV has 40 antique buildings, including three water-powered mills and a working farm. Visitors can meet the Village's heritage breed animals, and tour one of its five gardens, which have heirloom herbs, vegetables, and flowers in bloom.
Old Sturbridge Village is one of the country's oldest and largest living history museums, celebrating life in early New England from 1790-1840.
