Old Sturbridge Village changes winter schedule;
expands popular evening Christmas festivities

Offers “12 Nights of Christmas” in December

New winter hours begin Oct. 24

STURBRIDGE, Mass. (October 16, 2009): Old Sturbridge Village President and CEO Jim Donahue has announced that the Village will change its winter schedule of operation this season and will expand its popular evening Christmas by Candlelight programs, doubling them to 12 Nights of Christmas. OSV is shifting its hours to better reflect visitor needs and preferences during the holiday and winter season.

Details of the change are available online at www.osv.org and by calling 1-800-SEE-1830. Visitors and OSV members are encouraged to check the new schedule changes as they plan visits to the Village during late fall and winter.

Beginning Oct. 24, the Village will shift to a five-day schedule for winter: open 9:30 – 4:00 p.m. Wednesday through Sunday, and closed on Monday and Tuesday. During December, in order to expand the evening Christmas celebrations, the Village will focus staff and resources solely on night time programming and will be closed during the day from Dec. 1-25.

However, the Village will open from 4:00 – 9:00 p.m. Thursday through Sunday for its 12 Nights of Christmas festivities on the evenings of Dec. 3-6; Dec. 10-13; and Dec. 17-20. Evening admission is $14 per person; $12 for OSV members, children under 3, free. For details and tickets: www.osv.org.

After Christmas, beginning Dec. 26, Old Sturbridge Village will return to a daytime schedule for its popular school vacation week activities and will be open daily from 9:30 – 4:00 p.m. Dec. 26 through Jan. 3, 2010.

“We realize the new December schedule is a big change for our members, and we ask for their support and patience as we explore new and creative ways to make Sturbridge a holiday entertainment destination,” Donahue said.

As a thank you, Old Sturbridge Village will offer all museum members and Sturbridge residents a 50 percent discount to the first weekend of the 12 Nights of Christmas celebration Dec. 3-6. Museum members will receive also receive a 20% discount at the OSV Gift Shop during the first weekend, and the Village will host a special members shopping night on Sat. Dec. 5.

“We are changing our hours to accommodate this increased demand for holiday evening programs,” Donahue added. “In winter we also find that our visitor patterns shift more to the latter part of the week and weekends, so it makes sense to shift our hours accordingly.”

“At holiday time, people love to see the magic of our Village lit by candlelight. It has an 'enchanted village' feeling – a special glow. The sleigh rides, holiday music, and our historians in 1830s costume give the whole experience a warmly nostalgic feeling that puts people in the holiday spirit,” Donahue said.

During December the OSV Gift Shop and New England Book Store will be open daily for holiday shopping as usual from 10:00 a.m. – 4:30 p.m. and will be open during each evening of 12 Nights of Christmas until 9:30 p.m. OSV members will also receive 20% discounts at the gift shop each Monday-Wednesday in December through Dec. 23. The gift shop will be closed Christmas Day. OSV’s Oliver Wight Tavern will be open on the same schedule as the museum.

For the remainder of the winter in 2010, Old Sturbridge Village will resume its winter schedule, open Wednesday-Sunday 9:30 – 4:00 p.m. As always, the Village will be open on all Monday holidays, including Martin Luther King Jr. Day Jan. 18 and Presidents Day February 15, and will be open daily for school vacation week Feb. 13 – 21.

The Village will return to its regular seven-day-per-week schedule for the busy summer tourist season on April 3, 2010. OSV administrative office hours remain unchanged throughout the year and are open 8:30 – 5:00 p.m. Monday – Friday.

Old Sturbridge Village is one of the oldest and largest living history museums in the country and celebrates New England life in the 1830s. Admission: $20; seniors, $18; children 3-17, $7; children under 3, free. The museum is open year round, but hours of operation change seasonally. For information: 1-800-SEE-1830; www.osv.org.
