Drummers' Call at Old Sturbridge Village September 12 |
| New event draws fife & drum corps from around New England, explores "music with a message" |
| STURBRIDGE, MA (September 2) – Old Sturbridge Village hosts a gathering of fife & drum corps from around the region during Drummers’ Call on Sat., Sept. 12. The Village’s popular August re-enactor weekend (“Redcoats & Rebels”) serves as the inspiration for this new event, which features martial musicians in a flag-raising, grand parade, fashion show detailing what was worn in the corps, and musical performances by individual groups from Massachusetts, Connecticut, New Hampshire, and Maine. A highlight of the day will be “jollification,” following the afternoon presentations, when the Common is the setting for a sort of fife & drum “jam session.” Other activities at the Village that day include a game of 19th-century base ball, French & English (tug of war), crafts demonstrations, mill demonstrations, and an opportunity to help the farmers with late summer work. Guests can ride the Quinebaug River boat (extra charge), and take a free ride around the Mill Pond on the horse-drawn carry-all. For more information: www.osv.org; 1-800-733-1830.
“These musicians served an important role in daily life in a military camp and on the battlefield,” said Special Events Coordinator Jim O’Brien. “Since they could be heard above the din of the cannon, fifers and drummers used specific rhythms and tunes to communicate information to the troops on the battlefield. In the camp, they served as a sort of traveling alarm clock, marking the time to rise in the morning, the time to mess (eat), and other events of the day. “Most of us today have heard of ‘Taps,’ the equivalent of ‘lights out’ from the Civil War era,” continued O’Brien. “OSV’s ‘Drummers’ Call’ invites folks to explore music as communication, literally, music with a message.” Old Sturbridge Village celebrates New England life in the 1830s and is open daily 9:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. Admission: $20; seniors, $18; children 3-17, $7; children under 3, free. 800-SEE-1830; www.osv.org. # # #
