Second Annual Gala to Benefit Old Sturbridge Village Set for Sept. 12

Auction items include a Caribbean vacation, South African photo safari, "Top Gun" air combat dogfight, skydiving, sport tickets, and more

(STURBRIDGE, MA) – Aug. 10, 2009: A 20-member committee of Old Sturbridge Village supporters, led by Elizabeth Peppel of Charlton, will host the second annual Old Sturbridge Village Gala beginning at 5:30 p.m. on Sat. Sept. 12 at OSV’s Oliver Wight Tavern. The event, themed "The Magic of Old Sturbridge Village," will feature cocktails, dining, dancing to the music of Lynn Jolicoeur and the Pulse, and one-of-a-kind live and silent auction items, and will benefit OSV’s historical costume program. Cost is $150 per person, and tables of ten are available. For reservations and more information: (508) 347-0210; development@osv.org.

Topping the list of auction items to be offered are a “Top Gun” air combat dogfight experience, a South African photo safari to the Zulu-Nyala Private Game Reserve, skydiving for two, a Caribbean family vacation in St. Thomas, sailing on a 12-meter yacht in Newport, R.I., and a private evening "Dinner in a Country Village" at Old Sturbridge Village for 14 guests.

The auction also includes VIP tickets to Red Sox and Patriots games, a Boston Pops Holiday Concert, a riverboat tour of the Charles River, and a tour of Boston on Segway personal vehicles. Also offered is the American Girl Doll of the Year "Chrissa," along with hand-stenciled furniture and a hand-sewn wardrobe.

Expert carpenter Norm Abram, host of The New Yankee Workshop, and Master Gardener and columnist Paul Rogers have each donated auction items. Abram is hand-crafting a kitchen cupboard, and Rogers is donating horticultural services. Both Abram and Rogers are Old Sturbridge Village Trustees.

A distinctive Old Sturbridge Village Gala "Signature Chair," has been commissioned especially for the auction. The chair is a reproduction Hitchcock chair hand-painted by Sturbridge artist Tim Bardsley. Signed and dated, the chair is the second in a new series of Old Sturbridge Village signature pieces.

Last year’s Old Sturbridge Village Gala was an unprecedented success, raising $90,000 for the museum, according to OSV Chief Executive Officer Jim Donahue. "We are deeply grateful to members of both last year’s and this year’s Gala committees. Not only are they extremely hard-working and dedicated -- they also are experts in planning a great party for a good cause."

Main corporate sponsors of the Gala include Hometown Bank, Bollus Lynch, Xtra Mart Convenience Stores, Schmidt Equipment, and J. S. Fleming Associates, Inc.

Old Sturbridge Village celebrates New England life in the 1830s and is open daily 9:30 a.m. – 5:00 p.m. Admission, which includes a second visit free within 10 days, is: $20; seniors, $18; children 3-17, $6; children under 3, free. For information: www.osv.org or call 1-800-733-1830.
