A Year of Local Harvests |
| Area libraries team with Old Sturbridge Village to highlight locally-grown foods |
| STURBRIDGE (August 13, 2008) - The grassroots movement to experience and embrace locally grown foods is alive and will in the Sturbridge area. A Year of Local Harvests is the theme for a 12-month series of "Moveable Feasts," all community events sponsored by the Joshua Hyde Library of Sturbridge in partnership with Old Sturbridge Village, the Charlton Public Library, and the Jacob Edwards Library of Southbridge.
The Moveable Feasts will begin in September with a Local Harvest Dinner cooked by Tantasqua Culinary Arts students at the Tantasqua High School Cornerstone Cafe on Wednesday, September 17, from 6-8pm. On Thursday, September 25 at 7pm, Logan Ward, author of See You in A Hundred Years, will give a lecture at Old Sturbridge Village in the Stephen M. Brewer Theater, followed by a book signing. Both September events are free and open to the public, by prior reservation at the Joshua Hyde Library, 508-347-2512. Highlights of the year-long events are an all-day Vegetable Gardening Workshop at Old Sturbridge Village, featuring Paul Rogers, on Saturday, March 28 (2009), and the Great Tomato Plant Giveaway and Gardener's Fair on the Sturbridge Common Saturday, May 30 (2009; 10am-4pm). Other Moveable Feasts include a Children's Applefest Saturday, October 4 at 11am and Bean Planting for Children on April 22 (2009) at 11am, both at the Charlton Public Library; and children's performer Jackson Gillman presenting an afternoon of interactive story and song "Riot in the Garden" on April 20 (2009) at 2pm at the Joshua Hyde Library; and there will also be a series of timely book discussions, container herb and salad workshops, talks by area food producers and organizations, and the movie Future of Food. Internationally recognized author, Frances Moore Lappe, whose books include Diet for a Small Planet and Hope's Edge will conclude the year with a lecture at Saturday, September 26, 2009 (5pm), at Old Sturbridge Village during the Agricultural Fair weekend, followed by a final Local Harvest Dinner at the Village's Oliver Wight Tavern.
