July 19, 2010 – More than 800 historic military reenactors from all over the northeast will converge on Old Sturbridge Village Aug. 7-8 to take part in the eighth annual Redcoats & Rebels Revolutionary War reenactment. Named a “Best in New England” event by Yankee magazine, Redcoats & Rebels is one of the largest such reenactments in the country. Redcoats & Rebels is free with museum admission and visitors may attend both days of the event for the price of one admission, as Old Sturbridge Village offers a free second-day visit within 10 days. Redcoats & Rebels includes extended hours to 8 p.m. on Saturday evening Aug. 7 for “Twilight Encampment,” where guests can mingle with the troops around the campfires. Parking is free. Admission: $20; seniors, $18; children 3-17, $7; children under 3, free. Details: www.osv.org ; 800-733-1830. More than 40 units will conduct mock battles with lots of musket, cannon and artillery fire, demonstrate marching and drilling, and entertain visitors with fife and drum music. British units and their Irish, Welsh, and Scotch allies will camp the OSV Common, and units portraying Colonial Minutemen and their French allies will be camped throughout the Village countryside. “Why do reenactors decide to portray British troops? Often it’s because they like the fancier and more colorful uniforms – and they get a kick out of depicting the ‘bad guys,’” notes Jim O’Brien, coordinator special events at Old Sturbridge Village. Other units portray the British for historical accuracy. “In order to fully appreciate what the Colonists achieved, you really have to see what a well-equipped, well-trained army they were up against,” says Jim Murphy of Coventry, Conn., who is with the Ninth Regiment of Foot. “That’s why we reenact as the British.” Some units portray the Colonists’ French allies, like 85ème Régiment de Saintonge. “We want to be as accurate as possible in bringing the American Revolution to life,” notes Brian Mixter of Hudson, Mass. “It is important to remember those who helped America secure her independence, and after the battle of Saratoga, French support of the Colonial cause was absolutely vital in defeating the British.” Redcoats & Rebels visitors are often surprised to see more than just red and blue uniforms at the event. According to O’Brien of Old Sturbridge Village, regiments in the Revolution wore all sorts of colorful uniforms. “One British unit wears yellow uniforms, others have green trim, some wear plaid knee-high socks, and some French and Colonial units dress in white.” Old Sturbridge Village celebrates New England life in the 1830s and is open daily 9:30 a.m. – 5:00 p.m. seven days a week. Parking is free and visitors get a free second-day return visit within 10 days. Admission: $20; seniors, $18; children 3-17, $7; children under 3, free.
