Thanksgiving Celebrations at
Old Sturbridge Village:

Free admission for children now through Nov. 29;
Includes Thanksgiving weekend celebrations

Sturbridge, Mass. (Nov. 11, 2009) – Old Sturbridge Village is celebrating the Thanksgiving season a little early with a special thank-you gift for visitors: free admission for children in November (a $7 value per child). From now through Nov. 29, all kids under 17 get free admission to the Village when accompanied by an adult. (The offer does not apply to educational groups of 10 or more).

The “Kids Free at OSV” offer also applies during the museum’s popular Thanksgiving weekend celebration, when family-friendly activities are planned on Thanksgiving Day, Thurs., Nov. 26, through Sunday, Nov. 29. Highlights include Native American foods and traditions, hearth cooking, an old-fashioned shooting match, an 1830s wedding and more. Visitors can also ride the stagecoach, take part in hands-on crafts, and enjoy storytelling, music, and puppet shows. For times and details: www.osv.org; 1-800-733-1830.

Marge Bruchac, who is an Abenaki Indian, will showcase Native American “foodways” in character as Molly Geet, an “Indian Doctress,” Thursday through Saturday, Nov. 26-28. She will also give presentations on Native American traditions of giving thanks. Old Sturbridge Village historians in costume will demonstrate cooking a traditional Thanksgiving meal by the hearth, and will also demonstrate a favorite Thanksgiving pastime, a musket shooting match, which was the 1830s equivalent to watching after-dinner football games.

A Thanksgiving Day sermon with organ music will be held in the Center Meetinghouse at 12 noon and 2 p.m. on Thursday, Nov. 26, and museum interpreters will recreate a traditional early New England wedding on Saturday, Nov. 28. Thanksgiving was a popular time for weddings in early New England, since families were gathered and the work of the harvest was done.

Old Sturbridge Village celebrates early New England life from 1790-1840. Located just off the Mass Pike, I-84 and Rte. 20 in Sturbridge, Mass., OSV is open year-round, but hours of operation change seasonally. In November, the Village is open Wednesday through Sunday 9:30 a.m. – 4 p.m. Admission includes free parking and a free second-day visit within 10 days. OSV members receive free daytime admission all year long. For details, visit www.osv.org or call 1-800-SEE-1830.
