December 26-27
9:00 a.m. - 3:00 p.m.
Extended Care 7:30 a.m. - 5:30 p.m.
Children ages 6-17 can experience a piece of New England's winter traditions in this two-day Discovery Adventure. In historical clothing, they will lend a hand with typical 1830s winter chores, such as dipping candles, making sausage, stacking oven wood, and learning to knit. They will see how families ate during the winter by keeping food in the root cellar and will learn about other types of food preservation. With a new appreciation of what food preparation was like before modern grocery stores, children will make "pumpkin leather" pie using hearth cooking techniques. Winter was also a time to visit with friends and family, play games, and tell stories. We will explore how children in the 19th century had winter fun when the work was done!
