Carpenter
Facilities & Grounds Department
Responsibilities
Under supervision of the Building Trades Manager, perform carpentry and related maintenance tasks on all historical and non-historical structures.
Essential duties and responsibilities include the following. Other duties may be assigned.
- Provide the best experience possible for all visitors.
- Ensure the safety and cleanliness of the work area and share responsibility with all staff for the clean and neat appearance of the entire museum.
- Perform historical and non-historical carpentry and masonry work consisting of restoration, conservation and preservation projects including: roof shingling, sidewall installation, structural framing repairs, interior and exterior trim fabrication and installation, fenestration, masonry, plaster repairs, etc.
- Perform exhibition carpentry work on exhibit installations including: exhibit case fabrication and setting construction.
- Assist in projects requiring a broad understanding of masonry, electrical, plumbing, mechanical works, etc.
- Provide general hand tools and maintain OSV power tools.
- Read and understand blueprints.
- Responsible for snow plowing and assisting in snow removal and ice control.
Requirements
Qualifications

Education and/or Experience
- Associate’s degree or equivalent of two years college or technical school/ vocational training
- Five to seven years carpentry experience, or equivalent combination of education and experience
- Ability to read and understand blueprints and create shop drawings
Certificates, Licenses, and Registrations
Valid driver’s license, ability to acquire a Massachusetts Hoisting Engineer’s license.
Independent Action
The employee generally establishes own work plan and priorities, using established procedures to assure timely completion of assigned work in conformance with departmental policies and practices; problems lacking clear precedent are reviewed with supervisor prior to taking action.

Housekeeper/Janitor
Housekeeping Department
Responsibilities
Under supervision of the Housekeeping Manager, perform year-round cleaning and general maintenance duties for public restroom areas, buildings, offices, exhibit spaces and other large scale cleaning and maintenance tasks as assigned.
Essential duties and responsibilities include the following:
- Provide the best experience possible for all visitors
- Ensure the safety and cleanliness of the work area and share responsibility with all staff for the clean and neat appearance of the entire museum
- Keep the public restroom areas throughout the Museum in clean and orderly condition at all times, checking that paper and soap supplies are continually replenished and that all equipment is in functioning order
- Sweep, mop, scrub and vacuum floors as needed
- Empty trash and garbage containers
- Change light bulbs and unclog drains
- Wash windows and steam clean carpet areas and perform other scheduled large area periodic cleaning duties
- Wash windows and display cases
- Care for certain collection items with museum exhibit spaces as directed and prescribed
- Notifies maintenance concerning needs for repairs
- Other duties as assigned

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly exposed to cleaning solutions and chemicals. While traveling from one Museum building to another, the employee is regularly exposed to outside weather conditions. The noise level in the work environment from cleaning equipment (such as vacuums or carpet cleaners) is moderate.
Education and/or Experience
- High school diploma or G.E.D.
- 1-3 months related janitorial or maintenance experience
- Ability to read, write and communicate routine information and work reliably from written and verbal instructions
- Equivalent combination of education and experience
Schedule, Salary
5:30 - 9:30 AM, 5 days/week, at least one weekend day. $9.00/hr.
